Bindiya Goswami is a former Indian actress who is well known for her remarkable work in Hindi cinema. The actress is prominent for her role as Urmila Shankar in the 1979 film Golmaal.

Bindiya Goswami was born on Saturday, January 6, 1962 (age 60 years; as of 2022) in Kaman, Bharatpur (Rajasthan). During her childhood she always aspired to become an air hostess like her elder sister Pearl. However, at the age of fourteen her life went to a major turning point when she attended a party at her neighbour composer Pyarelal’s house. Meanwhile, Jaya Chakravarthy, mother of actress Hema Malini who was also present at the party saw Bindiya Goswami and thought her face bear resemblance to Hema Malini. Thereafter, Jaya Chakravarthy directly brought her into Hindi cinema and immediately cast her in Jeevan Jyothi (1976) and then in Mukti (1977).Thus this initiated Bindiya Goswami career in acting.

Bindiya Goswami is a daughter to Tamil father Shri Venugopal Goswami and catholic mother Dolly Goswami. Her father Shri Venugopal Goswami was a priest of Vallabh Sampraday. She also has two siblings named Rajiv Goswami and Pearl.
Husband
In 1980, Bindiya Goswami married her co-star Vinod Mehra when she was just 18. Bindiya Goswami and Vinod Mehra ended their marriage in four years. In 1990, Vinod Mehra passed away.
In 1985, a year after her divorce Bindiya Goswami started seeing director J.P. Dutta and reportedly married him the same year.
Children
Bindiya Goswami has two daughters from her second marriage with J.P. Dutta named Nidhi Dutta and Siddhi Dutta.

Acting
After seeing the resemblance of face to Hema Malini, Jaya Chakraborty immediately decided to give Bindiya a career in acting. Soon after attending Pyarelal’s party, Jaya Chakraborty sent a message to Bindiya’s house regarding inquiring about her interest in acting. As the offer seemed very safe as it was sent by the renowned actress Hema Malini’s mother, Bindiya’s family immediately said yes. During an interview with filmfare Bindiya claimed
Jayaji was known to be protective about Hemaji. My mother felt I too would be in safe hands. Jayaji was dynamic. Her kajal bhari eyes and quiet presence was compelling.
Bindiya Goswami started her acting career with the movie Jeevan Jyoti.In just a year, she was assigned for the movie Mukti (1977) which was directed by Raj Tilak. Jeevan Jyothi which is known to be a remake of a Telugu movie Muthyala Muggu (1975) flopped. At the same time, Mukti (1977) became a major hit during that time.

The popularity of Bindiya’s face and her performance attracted directors. She have also been assigned as a lead actress in some of the Basu Chatterjee movies such as Khatta Meetha (1978) and Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). Khatta Meetha became a sensation during the 1970s and 1980s. Bindiya Goswami then played Urmila Shankar role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s movie Golmaal which is known to be the best movie of her entire acting career (1979).
In 1980 she was cast in the movie Shaan which was directed by Ramesh Sippy. She has also acted in many Hindi movies with Vinod Mehra such as Dada (1979), Jaandaar (1979), Muqabla (1979) and Khud Daar (1982). When she went to the sets for her work she was commanded by her mother to only concentrate over her work or either books. During an interview with Filmfare, she was asked if she grabbed the attention of many male co-stars on the set to which she replied
Will you believe me when I say there was no male attention at work? Except from one quarter whom I finally went and married”
Bindiya’s career started seeing its downfall after she married Vinod Mehra in 1979. The reason behind this was Vinod Mehra was already married to Meena Broca. Although Vinod Mehra and Meena was already seeing an unsuccessful marriage and they separated just after Vinod and Bindiya’s marriage, the controversies created due to their marriage started creating barriers in Bindiya’s acting career. After four consecutive years of unsuccessful marriage, Vinod Mehra and Bindiya Goswami filed their divorce.
Vinod Mehra died of a heart attack in October 1990. During an interview when she was questioned about her ex-husband Vinod Mehra she said
He was one of the nicest human beings I’ve met. A great soul! But my mukkam, my destiny was JP saab and my two daughters Nidhi and Siddhi”
Costume Designing
After Completely ending her acting career she started costume designing for her husband J.P Dutta movies. She designed costumes in movies such as Border (1997), Refugee (2000), Kargil (2003) and Umrao Jaan (2007). Her daughter Nidhi Dutta aspired to become an actress like her mother and Sidhi Dutta wants to go into the production. Bindiya Goswami is assisting both of her daughters to achieve their goals. She have also claimed that she want her daughter Nidhi to follow her footsteps. In an interview, Bindiya Goswami added about her daughter Nidhi Dutta acting career
I have taught her the dos and don’ts in life. How she takes life forward, how she pursues her dream is her own. But I have told her not to get disappointed if her films don’t work. Some of the JP’s films may not have worked, but they are part of syllabi in film universities,”
