Shagun Batra is an Indian doctor who secured an all India rank 1 in the NEET PG 2022 examination.

Dr. Shagun Batra was born in 1999 (age 23 years; as of 2022) in New Delhi. She did her schooling at Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram, New Delhi. She was good at academics during her school days and topped in her class 12 board examinations. Meanwhile, she also attended the Goethe Institut, New Delhi, to pursue a course in the German language. After completing her schooling, she enrolled herself at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Delhi, to pursue MBBS, where she emerged as a gold medallist. As an MBBS student, she interned at Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi. While she was in the third year of college, Shagun concluded her internship and started preparing for the NEET PG 2022 examination. She secured an all India rank 1 in the exam in her first attempt. In May 2022, she secured Rank 13 in INI-CET. Apparently, she comes from a family of no doctors. Talking about it in an interview, she said,
I come from a family of no doctors, so being the first doctor in my family was itself a remarkable thing for me.”

Shagun’s father works in the IT sector, and her mother is a homemaker. She had a brother, who died in 2019.
NEET PG 2022 Preparations
Dr. Shagun attended PrepLadder’s online courses to prepare herself for the exam. Shagun also attended Dr Gobind Rai Garg’s live classes for preparations. Sharing her preparation schedule in an interview, Dr. Shagun said,
I started studying for the NEET PG 2022 exam in my third year of MBBS. For pre-final and final-year subjects, I used to practise MCQs. I had notes for all 19 subjects ready to revise before the internship commenced.”
Dr. Batra added,
I concentrated on self-study. I was able to manage coaching, self-study, and college with proper planning and strategy. Marrow GTs and National mock greatly helped my preparation for the NEET PG 2022 exam.”
Exam Strategy
In a media conversation, Dr. Shagun said that adequate sleep is a prerequisite for any exam. Sharing her exam day strategy during the conversation, she said,
Good exam practices such as sleeping well before the exam, taking good breakfast, reaching the exam centre on time, etc. were my specific exam day strategy. Trust your instincts, most of the time the correct answer is the one which you guess at the first go. Don’t lose hope, have faith in yourself.”
While concluding her conversation, Dr. Shagun said,
Most importantly, it’s just an exam, don’t be discouraged if the results don’t meet your expectations. Keep in mind that your rank does not define who you are.”
Facts/Trivia
- Apart from academics, Shagun is also active in sports. She loves playing Badminton.
- During an interview, Shagun shared that she never planned to pursue a career in the medical field. She said,
I come from a non-doctor family and being the first-ever doctor, I feel remarkable. I had no plans to proceed in the medical field and it was a last moment decision.”
- In an interview, she said that she desired to pursue her postgraduation from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, in MD (Medicine) and go for a super specialisation. She said,
I really wish to do my PG in Medicine Branch. I had qualified for INI-CET as well but couldn’t get this stream due to the low seat matrix. I’m hoping to get admission to PGI.”
- In December 2020, she achieved Rank 2 in the GCLT MAINS exam and won a cash prize of Rs. 6000.
